Great effort and epic tour in Doha!

We would like to thank everyone who traveled to play this weekend in Doha, Qatar, and to Andre, Kit, Kat and Dave for their support and for sorting the trip out. It was a big job organizing flights and visas.

The game was great fun and even though we lost 27 – 19 after dominating the first half 19 – 3. We didnt concede the lead until just a few minutes remaining. Everyone played extremely well and a special mention to Man of the Match, Andrew on a great performance and and C**t of the match Dave Barnes aka Grandad for thinking we could have 7 guys on the bench but only able to sub 5, GENIUS!

Congratulations to Brett, Dan, Lari, Lui, Nick, Rob B and Jamal on getting their AAARFC Club Coin. Well deserved!

We have a game vs Muscat scheduled for Thursday evening at 7. Lets train hard this week, play hard and get a big win at home.

Al Ain Vets Dominate in Seven Rugby Tournament

The Al Ain Sevens was round two of four straight weeks of Sevens tourneys culminating with the Dubai International Rugby Sevens Dec 1,2,3. Well done to all who played this weekend and everyone who assisted in organizing the tournament, a good day and great after party. The Amblers Vets 10’s went undefeated in round robin play although, in typical 14 minute game fashion, a couple of those wins came after time had expired in the final play of the game. All the participating Vets teams kept the fans on their feet for every minute of every match. In the finals the Amblers continued their winning ways but the Abu Dhabi Saracens would not go down without a fight and the final match needed extra time to decide the winner. In other play the Amblers Men’s Sevens team took home the plate trophy without actually recording a win, but that’s another story….

Not long to go before the Dubai 7′s and we still have Abu Dhabi next weekend so lets train hard.

Mens players volunteers needed for Youth Tourney

Traditionally the AAA Rugby Club have had the seniors help out with the juniors at the upcoming 2-day youth tournament. A logistical snag puts the men’s team at an away game in Kuwait on the Friday, however this is a one-day trip for the 1st XV so the men will be home Friday night. For those players who find it impossible to travel to Kuwait please let Andre know if you are available to assist. Then also for those returning from Kuwait the club would very much appreciate your assistance on Saturday during the second day of the youth tournament. The club understands that it is probably the last thing you want to do after a game and travel but the club needs you. Your help will be appreciated not only by the club but especially our young players, so again, please let Andre know if you are available to assist.

Defeat in Second Round of Gulf Conference

A 43-8 loss to Dubai TOA was a bit hard to swallow for the Amblers. The large score deficit didn’t reflect the game play up until half time when the score was 13-5 and it didn’t reflect the 15-10 pre-season test against TOA. However after a couple of quick tries in the second half by TOA the Amblers started to lack discipline and frustration began to mount which was a recipe for disaster as shown by the final score. Although a number of players may need to complete a self evaluation of their dedication and commitment as well as on pitch-effort a few players laid it all on the line for the entire 80 mins regardless of the score. Well done to Kiwi Jason, getting the Man of the Match for a great effort at #9. Also a mention to Ross for an awesome try and general great effort, Scotty for a few awesome runs (except your shoulder charge ;-) , Brett with a fantastic effort as Captain and of course Big Lari for his defense punishing crashes.

1st XV Taste Glory in First Gulf Conference Fixture of Season!

With one game each in pre-season tests the Dubai Wasps squared off against the Al Ain Abmblers on pitch one at the Al Ain Rugby Club this past Friday. Trevor Leota’s Dubai Wasps had won the last meeting between the two teams and rolled into Al Ain believing that they had what it takes to grab the first available points in the Gulf Conference. The Amblers knew they had a win in them if they could stick to the game plan and play hard for the full 80 mins. Pre-season had demonstrated that the Amblers had the skills needed to win but a 60 minute effort isn’t enough to seal the deal at this level of rugby. After kick-off it was apparent within only a few minutes of play that the teams were evenly matched and that it was going to take a lot of tough tackles, hard drives and heavy contact by both teams to gain the advantage. The contact was indeed punishing and a lot of players on both squads were slow to get up after the tackles, rucks and mauls. The Amblers drew first blood with some solid passing through the backs and a hard charge forward by Scott McReady to touch the ball down over the try line which was set up by a shoulder dislocating charge forward by Matt UK. The wasps however quickly answered with a try off of a handling error and followed almost immediately with a penalty kick to take the lead. The Amblers had been focusing in training on a very simple set of plays designed to draw in the opposition and setup the backs while at the same time slowing the play down so the forwards can reset after each breakdown. While the game plan appeared to be working as planned a pair of home team penalties deep in the defensive zone yielded two successful penalty kicks for the Wasps. The crowd sensed the game could be slipping away but the score was still close enough for the Amblers to make up for the penalties they had conceded. With 20 mins to go Quihen Marais scored a brilliant try with a succession of side-steps and straight-arms and the Amblers could feel that the momentum was now in their favor. Shortly after Quihen scored he made a try saving tackle that cost him a deep laceration to the face and he was forced to retire to the sideline. With only minutes remaining and the Amblers down by 4 points, former New England Patriot and 2001 SuperBowl ring owner Scott McReady answered with a brilliant run and try to take the score to 19 – 18 Amblers. A final strong defensive stand by the Ambler forwards preserved the lead and sealed the win and the first points awarded in the 2011/12 Gulf Conference series.

Amblers show strength against TOA

Well done this weekend, an awesome performance by everyone. The TOA team we played yesterday, is their best side that they can field (a much better side than the Wasps, who beat us last week) and again, they did not beat us, we beat ourselves. We improved a lot from the Wasps game and that’s great, cause we’re moving forward and getting better after every training and every game. Well done to our Man of the match winners, from the backs, Quihen, great performance in the midfield with Scotty. From the forwards, an awesome performance by all, but Jody (other than the high, illegal, dangerous tackle) had an awesome game and worked hard at every play. A special mention to Matt (US) for some awesome line-out work.

The preseason warm ups are over now. Starting this Friday, every game we play, we must play to win, cause there are points on the line, so lets see everyone at training this week and everyone think about what you could have done better on the field and make sure its done next Friday.

Again, AWESOME performance boys and you should be proud of it.

Loss to Wasps in Pre-Season Test

Dear Players and Supporters

We Hope all the players have recovered after the weekend game in Dubai. Even though we lost, well done to all the guys who came out and played, there is some positive to take from the loss and we’ll train hard this week and win big this weekend. Well done to Matt (US), Joe Hamm, Andrew, Juan, Ben and Jason who all played their first game for the Amblers firsts. Also congrats to Big Lari for being the Man of the Match and to our COM Semi, please don’t forget your boots again and hope no one else does either.

A very big thank you to our medics Eileen and Kat (Eileen I hope you’re okay after the bus trip back and hope we didn’t scare you away) and a big thank you to Dave aka Granddad (assistant coach) for all his support during the weekend.

Remember training tonight and Wednesday, come for 6:45 with all of your gear so we can “train” like we “play”.

The Next game is this weekend at home VS Toa, Al Ain Rugby Club kick-off at 5PM

1st XV take down Dubai Wasps in first friendly

In their first pre-season friendly game of the 2011/12 season the Mens 1st XV Al Ain Amblers hit the field in their new purple kit sponsored by Eastern Motors Mercedes-Benz. The Amblers quickly drew first blood with a hard-fought drive from the forwards who marched the ball 50 yards before letting the backs have a go in the final 10 yard phase for the opening try. The glory boys made the try look easy against what is arguably Dubai’s, and the UAE’s, finest team but the blood sweat and tears from the forwards laid the foundation for a brilliant game against the wasps. Head coach Bob Hope’s focus on the tight-five in pre-season training paid off and while he showed no emotion and only tough composure on the sidelines the lads knew he was happy with the outcome of all the hard 2010/11 post-season and 2011/12 pre-season efforts. The AAARFC 1st XV would go on to score again and win 2 try’s to 1 leaving the Wasps wondering how hard they would have to train to settle the score in upcoming regular season fixtures. All the participants played a fair and sporting game and afterwards enjoyed the hospitality of our Islander brothers and sisters who put on a post-game tropical feast with music dancing and of course a few cold beverages.

Men’s second squad dominates Wasps 2

After a brilliant game by the first squad, the AAARFC seconds had their work cut out for them. With only 10 mins between games the locker room was focused as head coach Bob Hope laid out the game plan. A game plan the players knew well and had focused on for all of pre-season training. As the team hit pitch 1 a good crowd of fans had gathered to cheer them on and the team knew they had to perform. Perform they did as the game plan was executed flawlessly with tries being delivered within minutes of the opening kick-off. The heat and lack of full-time games so far this season started to show as players started to slow due to the desert sun and sub-optimal fitness. However, the strategy and planning that had be drilled into their heads in training allowed the AAARFC to get the job done even with some players playing in their second game of the day in 40+ heat. The AAARFC went on to win handily 5 tries to 2.

Vets pre-season friendly – Victory!

The AAARFC Vets squad hit the field for game #3 on the day. The Mens 1st and 2nd team had already got the job done with a pair of wins so the pressure was on. The old boys didn’t disappoint and not only posted a number of tries against a new Saracens squad but they also laid down a physical beating to secure the AAARFC a third win for the day!
